Catch Statistics to 2011

Hope is remarkable for the consistency of its long-term sea-trout catch. During the past 40 years, while catches in many, if not most, other British fisheries have declined markedly, the Hope figures have remained steady.

The 20-year average from 1964 to 1983 was 757. For the following decade (1984 to 1993) the average dropped to 707; but then rose to 759 for the 10 years to 2004. As the 2012 season starts, the 10-year average stands at 744.

The pattern can be seen from this chart, which shows the annual totals, divided between Loch and River.  (Note that one of the three South End boats is omitted from the Loch Hope figures, as it is included with the Strathmore River catch returns.  The Loch totals are therefore somewhat understated, probably by around 10%.)

The seasonal Pattern

The charts below show the Weekly Catch figures since 2003.  If you’re trying to relate a particular week’s column to your own experience, remember that the figures consist of quarter-months, so they will seldom coincide exactly with calendar weeks.

Remember also that the figures reflect “fishing effort” as much as the number of fish in the water - and that historically our fishermen have tended to concentrate on (and in) July and August.
